We exist to
raise the bar

A Critical Search firm building extraordinary engineering teams for ambitious startups.

As painful as it is to say, most startups are building teams that won't win.

Startups are tough. There's hardship, challenge, risk, and more. Succeeding requires determination, ambition, and a good deal of luck. It also requires an enormous amount of talent.

But the talent required is often underestimated. In startups, 'good enough' is very rarely good enough - and when the odds are already stacked against you, creating an even bigger disadvantage is rarely a good idea.

Scouut exists to make sure ambitious startups never have a talent disadvantage, and to ensure that each critical hire brings with them the impact you require to succeed.

When you're already guaranteed to face challenges in building a startup, hiring the most talented people in the world doesn't have to be one of them.

With Scouut in your corner, it won't be.

How we keep the bar sky high →

What we believe.

Not everyone aligns with our beliefs, but we choose to share them openly so you can make that choice for yourself.

On Talent Density

We believe talent density is the single strongest determinant of startup success, but that most startups do not have enough exceptional capability per seat to achieve the outcomes they are pursuing.

On The Bar

We believe the bar is set by what the very best people are capable of achieving. Most people sit below the bar, but it should never be lowered. Everything else should be levelled up to meet people sitting above the bar.

On Team Size

We believe capability is not headcount, and that small, senior-weighted, high-leverage teams will always outperform larger teams of slightly lower-quality people.

On Compensation

We believe people should be paid for impact, and outlier talent creates outlier impact. Companies aiming to hire above the bar must have real intentions to pay well.

On AI

We believe that simply being great at the work is no longer enough. Exceptional people use AI to multiply their impact. Those who do not no longer clear the bar.

On Role Design

We believe every critical role is a product. It must be designed with intent for the outlier it needs to attract. Great marketing and sourcing cannot rescue a role that would never be chosen by the person you need.

On Hiring Speed

We believe speed matters at the candidate level, and that outlier candidates will not wait around, but that it is less important at an overall search level. Move decisively with each person, but never rush the search into a below-bar hire.

On Interviews

We believe interviews are mutual. Above-the-bar candidates have options and assess the company as carefully as it assesses them, so every interview must both test capability and earn conviction.

On Culture

We believe culture matters enormously, but is widely misunderstood. High performance, freedom to create impact, and alignment on where that impact should be directed are non-negotiable; but team bonding, shared hobbies and out-of-work friendships have little bearing on success.

On Risk

We believe startup success requires taking concentrated, intelligent risk. Paying for outlier talent and betting on a small number of exceptional people may feel risky; but doing anything else will always be far riskier.

If the hire matters,
let's talk.

Consequential hiring should never be left to chance.
Partnering with Scouut guarantees it won't be.
